“The Hunger Games” in North Carolina

The highly publicized movie, “The Hunger Games“, opens today.  Filmed in North Carolina, the movie is proving to be quite the boon for state tourism.  To celebrate the largest budgeted movie ever filmed in the Old North State, the VisitNC web site has created a very interesting travel itinerary inspired by “The Hunger Games” to guide fans through western North Carolina.  It includes sites featured in the movie and restaurants visited by the actors, as well as the Nantahala Outdoor Center and U.S. National Whitewater Center.  The filming of the movie made the news here a while back, so finally … Continue reading

Mashed Sweet Potatoes

New twist on a classic comfort food… When I started a dietary routine to rule out food sensitivities, I couldn’t eat white potatoes or other nightshade vegetables for at least 3 weeks.  This meant no mashed potatoes or Italian food for that time as well, so I had to come up with meals that would be equally satisfying and easy to prepare.  Did I mention that dairy was out, too?  My love for good food and cookbooks came in handy while I adjusted my food selections.  Luckily, I also live in the reigning state for sweet potato production.  North Carolina … Continue reading
